West London man charged after being found with firearms at Dover

A 24-year-old man from Ealing, west London has been charged with firearms offences following a search at the Port of Dover.

Upon his arrival at Dover on Thursday 26 March, Khalid Ahmed’s vehicle was searched under schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act 2000, where officers discovered a stash of self-loading pistols. He was subsequently arrested.

He was then detained under section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

On Saturday, a warrant of further detention was obtained from Westminster Magistrates’ Court, which resulted in him being held in police custody until Wednesday 1 April.

Ahmed, a dual Dutch and Irish national, appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court today, after he was charged with ten counts of possession of a prohibited weapon on Tuesday.

He was also charged with one count of possession of prohibited ammunition.

Ahmed is now remanded in custody until his hearing at the Old Bailey on 24 April, after not entering pleas.

Commander Helen Flanagan, Head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, said: “We appreciate this news may be concerning to the public.

“But since this arrest took place, we have been carrying out a number of enquiries and to-date, we have not identified any imminent threats to the public relating to this.

“Given the man has been charged, it is important there is no further speculation about the case while criminal proceedings are ongoing.

“But I can reassure the public that our investigation remains ongoing to ensure that the public is kept safe.”
