WATCH: Protesters gather outside Downing Street in solidarity with Venezuela

Protesters rallied outside Downing Street on Saturday to show support for Venezuela following the US capture of the country’s president.

Organised by Stop the War Coalition, attendees condemned President Trump’s capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who were captured during a military raid in Caracas in the early hours of 3 January.

President Trump announced the “large scale strike” on social media, stating that it had been carried out “in conjunction with US Law Enforcement”; President Maduro has been accused by the US of narco-terrorism and drug trafficking.

As they battled the cold, protesters chanted: “No more coups, no more wars. Venezuela isn’t yours.”

The event also featured a selection of speakers including Independent MP Diane Abbott.

Trump confirmed the US will run the South American country until a proper transition is possible, stating that the US want “nothing but peace, liberty, and justice for the great people of Venezuela”.

Sir Keir Starmer declined to comment on whether the US’s raid broke international law, but did confirm the UK’s long-time support of a transition of power in Venezuela.
