WATCH: London’s red-light tax: Do pay-as-you-go hire bikes incentivise bad cycling?

London’s streets have been transformed by the rapid rise of e-rental bikes from companies like Lime, Forest and Voi, offering a fast and convenient way to travel short distances across the city. 

Since 2016, the number of cyclists in the capital has increased by 45%, bringing clear benefits for congestion and emissions. 

However, concerns are growing around safety and reckless cycling behaviour, in particular, running red lights.

Software developer, Matt Taylor, believes that a ‘red-light tax’ is baked into the pricing models of these bike companies and created an online simulation to prove it.
