‘I was shaking like a leaf’: Checkmat Wimbledon Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instructor promoted to black belt

An ambitious Wimbledon Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instructor was promoted to black belt last weekend.

Carl Fisher, of Checkmat Wimbledon, was awarded his black belt by his instructor Luiz Ribeiro at London Fight Factory on Sunday, October 9.

Leo Vieira, chief instructor and founder of the Checkmat association, was in attendance, as well as thirteen other black belts and more than 100 students.

Carl said: “To say that this promotion came as a complete surprise is an understatement.

“I was shaking like a leaf when Luiz called out my name and I had to step out and have my belt replaced and even more when I had to give a speech.

“This promotion is a huge honour and it’s something that I have been striving for, for many years and I am looking forward to a new journey as a black belt.”
