Mothers, daughters, rebels: Tooting celebrates International Women’s Day with special Suffragette screening

A pop-up cinema is coming to Tooting Market to celebrate International Women’s Day with a special one-night only screening on Tuesday March 8.

It will be the first of its kind at the market and to chime with IWD acclaimed historical drama Suffragette will be shown on the silver screen.

The Tooting-born female producer who headed the film’s all-women crew, Faye Ward, will introduce the movie in her home borough.

Barbara Davison, the great niece of Emily Davison – the famous suffragette who died after colliding with King George V’s horse at the Epsom Derby while campaigning for women’s rights to vote – will also address the crowd.

The event has been backed by Tooting MP and London mayoral candidate Sadiq Khan, who said: “We need to keep the issue of gender equality firmly on the table.

“I have two daughters and so this is personal to me.”

Food and drink will also be available for attendees, provided by Unwined in Tooting Wine Bar and Kitchen.

A raffle and auction will give the chances for the audience to win prizes, including an Italian holiday and a wine tasting evening.

Organised by Tooting Labour, it is hoped the event will raise awareness about gender inequalities by bridging the gap between the sacrifices made by the suffragettes and ongoing issues.

According to women’s charity Refuge, two women a week in the UK are killed by a current or former male partner, and at least 750,000 children a year witness domestic violence.

The UN report that up to seven in ten women around the world experience physical and/or sexual violence at some point in their lives, making violence against women one of the world’s most widespread human rights abuses.
