Wait goes on in Kensington as counting is postponed

While the General Election draws to a close across the country, Kensington remains undeclared.

The hotly-contested seat is too close to call between the Labour and Conservative candidates, and due to a prior booking in the counting hall, the count has been suspended.

Throughout the night, recounts have been called for a number of bizarre reasons including discrepancy in the tables, as well as protestations from both Labour’s Emma Dent Coad and the Conservative candidate Victoria Borwick.

The seat has been held by the Conservatives since 2010 and before then its predecessor – Kensington and Chelsea – was one of the safest Tory seats in the UK.

Ms Dent Coad has threatened this legacy, and an extremely close race has led to several recounts throughout the course of the night.

To much public protestation, Mrs Borwick was absent from the constituency hustings and did not even turn up for the count last night.

She has faced strong criticism for her harsh Brexit stance and support for the Ivory trade.

Ms Dent Coad, on the other hand, has led a successful campaign and on two ‘misvote’ occasions was 55 and 39 votes ahead.

It is likely the count will be completed and a winner declared within the day, but until then both candidates will have to sit tight.
