Sky-high housing costs mean that one in every 58 London households are at risk of losing their home.
The Shelter research revealed that Lambeth, Croydon, Hammersmith and Fulham, Merton, Wandsworth and Kensington and Chelsea are regional hotspots where people are most likely to face eviction or repossession.
As many as one in every 50 homes in Lambeth and Croydon are at risk of being seized from owners by the bank, according to the Ministry of Justice data.
Chief executive of Shelter, Campbell Robb, said: “Imagine the panic of receiving a notice through the door saying that you could lose your home – that’s the devastating reality for thousands of people every week.
“The sky high cost of housing is making it harder and harder for families to keep a roof over their heads.
“And with the stakes so high, all it can take is one piece of bad luck to send a family spiralling towards homelessness.”
These figures follow the shocking research that revealed that more than 60,000 children in the capital will wake up homeless this Christmas.
Graphic designer Olcay faced this devastating situation last year when the family home was repossessed after her husband lost his job.
She said: “My five-year-old daughter and I became homeless after our home was repossessed.
“My husband had lost his job and we were struggling – he didn’t open the letters from the mortgage lender and I only found out the extent of our financial problems by accident, just before we were evicted.”
Olcay split from her husband and was placed in a B&B for several weeks, including over Christmas.
“The room was infested with lice and we had to share a kitchen and bathroom with several other families,” she explained.
“Thankfully I then called Shelter who were able help us to find a proper home, where we will be spending this Christmas.”
Mr Robb added: “Our advisers will be working non-stop this Christmas to support families who find themselves battling to keep their home – but our services are already over-stretched and we’re struggling to meet the demand.
“We desperately need more support from the public to help us make sure no-one is left to fight homelessness on their own this Christmas.”
