All change at Streatham Ice Hockey Club as former Wightlink Raiders coach takes charge

A new-look Streatham Ice Hockey Club face London Raiders in the cup tonight after a week of departures and signings.

The headline change saw player-coach Nick Chinn depart and Jeremy Cornish installed as the new head coach, joining from Wightlink Raiders after they had to abandon their season following the closure of the Isle of Wight’s only ice hockey rink.

His back catalogue also features Sheffield Steelers, Newcastle Vipers, London Racers and Basingstoke in a career that has seen him win multiple trophies.

Team captain Joe Johnston said: “When Cornish came in, he lay down the rules and vision for the team.

“He has been thorough and direct with what he expects from us and everyone has responded well.

“We had our first training session on Thursday and it was a brilliant day.

“It was high tempo and everyone was really enjoying it – a real step in the right direction.

“There was a real buzz and has generated lots of positive energy going forward for the two games this weekend.”

Club players Chris Wiggins, Conor Redmond, Conor Sheehan also left Streatham, with new signings Chris Cooke, 21, Ryan Webb, 22, and George Norcliffe, 22, adding an influx of young blood.

“The team are going for a younger, fresher, more speedy look,” added Johnston.

“I am now the veteran by about seven or eight years, but they keep me young.

“I feel like I am 21 again.”

Matt Coclough and Nick Compton have also signed up, with goalkeeper Will ‘the wall’ Sanderson returning to the ice after a few weeks away from training.

“It’s good to have him back – he’s been a big part of the team for years,” said Johnston.

Streatham HIC play their first match under Cornish today against London Raiders in the South One Cup and then face Bracknell Hornets at home in the league on Sunday.
