Harlequins stars Danny Care and Fiona Pocock helped raise £20,000 for rugby charity ‘Try for Change’ at Twickenham last Saturday.
The England and Harlequins’ stars were joined by 350 children from Barnes RFC at the home of English rugby for the event organised by the charity which uses rugby as a means to empower the more marginalised in society.
The children got a chance to step out onto the famous turf and play the sport they love and pose for pictures with and get the autographs of their heroes.
Michael Whitfield, Chairman of Barnes RFC, said; “We have given our youth players an unforgettable experience and raised almost £20,000 for the wonderful charity Try for Change.
“None of this would have been possible without the help and support of Try for Change, O2, the RFU and our fabulous volunteers on the Barnes RFC committee.
“So, a huge thank you for making the idea of a Barnes RFC Rugby Extravaganza a spectacular reality.”
The children were joined by a crowd of more than 700 friends and family, and all were given the chance to go on guided tours round the iconic stadium and the World Rugby Museum.
Pocock, who narrowly missed out on winning the Tyrells Premier 15s League with Harlequins last month, also led the u13s girl’s rugby session, another example in the long list of Quins players using their status to inspire and empower youngsters playing the game.
Care, who just missed the cut on the upcoming South Africa series with England, hosted the presentation ceremony at the end of the day.
There was even enough time for England mascot Ruckley to come down and pose for photos with the children and the crowd.
