Surbiton’s women hit Bowdon for six to remain top of the tree

Surbiton 6 Bowdon Hightown 0

Surbiton remain three points clear at the top of the Investec Women’s Premier Division after a comprehensive home win against Bowdon Hightown.

A hat trick from Jenna Woolven as well as strikes from Rebecca Herbert, Sarah Page and Natalie Maclean secured the points for the reigning champions.

The result earned the ladies their fifth clean sheet of the season and saw their goal difference rise to +25, more than double that of their nearest rivals Canterbury.

Herbert opened the scoring in the sixth minute from a penalty corner to net her ninth of the season and remain the league’s top goalscorer.

Bowdon’s defence was then taken apart three times in an eight-minute first-half spell. Goals from Woolven either side of a 24th minute strike from Page took Surbiton into the break 4-0 up.

Maclean added the fifth in the 54th minute before Woolven completed her hat-trick in the last minute of the game to hand Bowdon their heaviest defeat of the season.

Elsewhere, Wimbledon’s women slipped to seventh place in the Conference East after losing 3-1 away to league leaders East Grinstead, who remain unbeaten for far this season.
