Battersea’s Shaker Aamer released from Guantanamo Bay after 13 years

Battersea’s Shaker Aamer, the last British resident being held in Guantanamo Bay, was released this morning and is on his way back to the UK.

Mr Aamer, 46, was freed from the military prison following reports that he would leave in September.

The father-of-four was seized by bounty hunters in Afghanistan and was handed over to US forces in December 2001 before being transferred to the prison on Valentine’s Day 2002.

Mr Aamer’s has been held without trial at the notorious prison for the last 13 years.

He has  been cleared for release twice before in 2007 by US Presidents George W Bush and Barack Obama.

Mr Aamer, a Saudi national, is entitled to live in the UK as his wife, Zin, is British.
