Appeal for witnesses as armed robbers drive motorbike through door of Wimbledon jewellers

Police have renewed their appeal for witnesses to an armed robbery at a Wimbledon jewellers.

Four men on two motorbikes approached Michael Platt on Church Road on September 12 at about 12.45pm.

Many of the £80,000 worth of items stolen were bespoke pieces, made by owner Wayne Myers himself.

Mr Myers, 63, said: “It’s like losing works of art. It’s not easily replaceable and that’s what makes it so upsetting.”

The robbers drove one bike into the front door, causing it to fly off the hinges.

Two went in armed with hammers and pickaxes before smashing the cabinets and stealing more than £80,000 worth of jewellery.

The two others remained outside, holding large knives and bottles to make the shop workers believe they were armed with acid.

All four suspects, wearing dark tracksuits and gloves with motorbike helmets, made off on the bikes towards Wimbledon Park, which were later found abandoned on Wimbledon Common.

Detective Constable Rex Jude, from the South West Command Unit, said: “This was a violent and terrifying ordeal during broad daylight.

“I would urge anyone with information or who witnessed the incident to get in touch.”

No arrests have yet been made.
