Streatham MP Chuka Umunna endorses Liz Kendall for Labour leadership

Labour leadership contender Liz Kendall has been backed by Streatham MP and shadow business secretary Chuka Umunna.

Writing in the New Statesman he, along with his leadership team Stephen Twigg, Jonathan Reynolds and Emma Reynolds, nailed their colours to the mast branding her a ‘courageous’ candidate who is ‘challenging conventional wisdom’.

Mr Umunna wrote: “For us, our next leader must get this vision right.

“On all these big subjects, Liz Kendall has asked the tough questions and started to chart a course to the answers.

“She has been courageous in challenging conventional wisdom.

“She has no compunction in moving Labour beyond our comfort zone and is determined to build a team ready to chart a route forward.

“This is exactly what our party needs and that is why we are nominating her to be the next leader of the Labour Party.”

This backing comes just 11 days after Mr Umunna withdrew from the leadership race citing the ‘scrutiny and attention’ he had received since declaring his candidacy.
