Sadiq Khan praises police response to Tooting Broadway evacuation caused by ‘threatening’ man

The swift tube evacuation after reports of a scissor-wielding man in Tooting Broadway was praised by Labour London Mayoral candidate Sadiq Khan.

Mr Khan, Tooting MP, will be facing up to many questions about how he plans to tackle terror in the run up to London’s mayoral elections next year.

His constituency is the first to receive help from armed police, following the attacks in Paris on Saturday, as London has remained on high alert against a terrorist incident.

He said: “This must have been extremely distressing for passengers who did not know what was happening.

“It is important that all incidents such as this are taken extremely seriously, and I welcome the quick response from both Tfl and the police.”

Armed police were called to Tooting Broadway at lunchtime on Wednesday after reports that a man was making threats and holding scissors.

However, police did not find anyone wielding scissors and the firearms officers were stood down.

The suspect has still not been found and Tfl are urging anyone with information to come forward.
