A man was killed last night after being hit by a bus in Tooting.

The victim, who has not yet been named but is believed to be in his 50s, was hit on a pedestrian crossing as the 131 bus turned from Mitcham Road into Tooting High Street.

The man was dragged under the bus outside Tooting Broadway tube station and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses of the accident spoke of their shock.

“Before the police got here there were tons of people crowding round and you could see the person under the bus,” one witness told the Evening Standard.

“We are all just still shaking. It was a very sad scene and some people were crying.”

London Ambulance Service said they sent a number of ambulance crews to the scene.

“Sadly, despite the best efforts of our medics, the patient was pronounced dead at the scene by the air ambulance doctor,” said a spokesman.

No arrests have been made.
