New grant scheme helps Richmond residents pay fuel bills

A helping hand is being offered by Richmond Council this year to aid low-income families and pensioners in paying their annual fuel bill.

The Fuel Grant Scheme was kickstarted after considering the potentially devastating financial impact of COVID-19 on families during winter months.

Councillor Robin Brown, Richmond Council Lead Member for Finance said: “Making sure that no one is faced with fuel poverty is a major priority for this council.

“We are committed to supporting residents who are struggling financially with their home heating bills.”

The scheme will provide up to £170 towards successful applicants and the money will be credited directly to applicants’ electricity or gas account.

Eligible applicants must provide evidence of:

  • Any state benefits they receive
  • A copy of their most recent Housing Benefit or Council Tax Reduction decision notice (if entitled)
  • A copy of a bill or statement showing an account number from their energy supplier.

The closing date for applications is March 31, 2022.

Councillor Michael Wilson, Lead Member for Equality, Communities and the Voluntary Sector commented: “We are fully aware that the last 18 months have been extremely challenging on families and being able to afford the basics like food and essential utility costs is a real worry.

“These much-needed funds will allow us to help reach the hardest hit families and individuals over the winter period.”

If you are unable to apply online, an application form can be posted to you.

Residents can collect and post their forms from the Civic Centre in Twickenham.
