Ironically for a show containing the word ‘monologues’, Eve Ensler’s play The Vagina Monologues  never fails to get everyone talking.

Women’s experiences of love, sex, sexuality and abuse are discussed in monologues based on the playwright’s interviews with over 200 women.

The play stars Diane Keen, of the BBC’s Doctors, and mainstays of British soap-land, Terri Dwyer and Hollie-Jay Bowes.

In an interview with Charlotte Boan, Bowes said: “I think there’s many a time a woman has felt uncomfortable in a situation and never really felt able to talk about it.”

Bowes, who is the youngest cast member at 24, said she still looks back at situations and thinks certain things were not ok, though she didn’t speak up at the time.

“As women, we all go through it,” she added.

Keen said: “The play is something actors want to be part of. I’m tickled pink I was asked and was available to do this show.”

It is perhaps unsurprisingly that a performer would want to join the likes of Meryl Streep, Glenn Close and Kate Winslet, who have all starred in the play.

Keen said it’s extraordinary how the show is put together as there is so much light and shade.

Dwyer spoke about how attitudes towards sex have progressed.

She said: “I remember when I was younger my mum was too embarrassed to talk about sex because her generation didn’t talk about it.”

Ensler established the women’s charity V-Day, which receives a portion of ticket sales for each performance of the play.
