Neal Ardley insisted leading AFC Wimbledon to League Two survival was an unbelievable managerial moment and one that will take some beating.

Talisman Jack Midson provided the winning goal from the penalty spot, which also marked his 100th professional appearance for the club, in the 2-1 victory over Fleetwood Town.

The win meant the Dons will spend a third straight year in league football, and Ardley – who played for the previous incarnation of Wimbledon – dedicated it to the fans.

“Hopefully I do go on and have a good managerial career, but I think it would have to be something spectacular to better this,” said Ardley.

“To turn it around and help a club that I hold so dear to my heart to stay up is unbelievable.

“I am so pleased for the club and I know how much it means to the fans to hold onto their league status.

“But we have and I am proud to have played a part in the wonderful history of this club.”

Midson insisted it is Wimbledon’s own hands to make sure next year’s season is different, but the Dons top scorer also wants to better his own performance.

“It means everything to the fans and the players who got us into League Two that we are still in the Football League,” said Midson.

“It would have been devastating to drop into the Conference, I have played in it and it is a tough league to get out of.

“We were in that position for a reason and it is down to us all to make sure we are not in that situation again.

“I need to concentrate on my football. I scored 15 goals this season, but I had set myself a target of scoring more goals than last season.

“That was disappointing in a way and I want to put that right next season.”
