Labour Sutton and Cheam transgender Parliamentary candidate announces campaign for London Assembly

Labour’s first openly transgender former Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Sutton and Cheam, Emily Brothers, today announced she will be running for a London Assembly seat.

Blind all her life, Ms Brothers, of Sutton, will be the first candidate for the London Assembly to be both transgender and disabled.

Ms Brothers, 51, stood as the Labour candidate in the 2015 General Election and increased Labour’s vote by 4% against the national trend but lost out to Conservative Paul Scully.

Ms Brothers told SW Londoner: “Issues around equality are important to me as I am both transgender and disabled.

“Sharing prosperity is vital such as with disabled people and closing economic inequality across the capital.

“It will be a challenge as I am not a priority candidate.”

Ms Brothers has lived in London for more than 25 years and is originally from Liverpool.

Ms Brothers will be campaigning closely with Tooting MP Sadiq Khan as he takes on Richmond Park MP Zac Goldsmith in the race for Mayor of London.
