Embarrassment for Wimbledon Labour as candidate’s business seized for ‘suspected dishonesty’

The Wimbledon Labour candidate is being investigated by legal authorities for ‘suspected dishonesty’ in his work as a solicitor.

The office of candidate Imran Uddin, 37,  has been seized by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) with clients’ files being confiscated.

The SRA said today it intervened in the Crescent Law practice in Morden, which is run by Mr Uddin and partner Muzammil Abid.

SRA added: “The practising certificates of Mr Uddin and Mr Abid have been automatically suspended, so they cannot practice as a solicitor.”

Mr Uddin who is also a councillor for St Helier ward on Merton council, was selected to fight the Tory-held Wimbledon seat in early May.

Wimbledon Labour Party said it was ‘disappointed’ to learn of the investigation and has written to Mr Uddin for clarification.

A Labour spokesman said it is an ongoing private matter for the candidate and he remains on the ballot paper for the election.

The SRA said: “An intervention means the SRA has closed a firm with immediate effect.”
