TV PUNDIT Chris Kamara believes the days of the Capital One Cup being an afterthought for Premier League clubs is long gone – and he reckons the likes of QPR will be desperate to sniff out some silverware this season.

Mark Hughes’ side will travel to Reading next Wednesday with their stuttering start to their Premier League campaign no doubt weighing heavily on their mind.

In the past the Capital One Cup has been an afterthought at both the top and lower end of the table with clubs more concerned and focused on the bread and butter of Premier League matters.

However Kamara believes the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Birmingham have ushered in a sea change in terms of the attitudes among Premier League clubs in recent seasons.

And as a result he believes the likes of QPR’s clash with Reading at Loftus Road on Wednesday night could be every bit as competitive as a Premier League showdown between the sides.

“In recent seasons the attitude to clubs has changed and you see every team in the Premier League, minus the top four, playing their best players and wanting to win it because they know how important trophies can be,” said Kamara.

“All the Premier League clubs seem to be no different now and will no doubt be going out to try and win the Capital One Cup but it is a tough prospect now with so many good sides in the competition looking to put out their best sides.

“Arsenal, Liverpool and Birmingham have shown that in the last two seasons but aside from the top four no club is able to make big changes to their team in the League Cup.

“With winning a trophy being so difficult these days, clubs are desperate for silverware wherever they can get it and so people are giving the Capital One Cup a lot more attention.”
