Wimbledon teenager ‘delighted’ after selling app to Yahoo for millions

By SWLondoner staff

A Wimbledon teenager is set to become one of the world’s youngest self-made millionaires after his app was acquired by Yahoo.

Nick D’Aloisio launched Summly, an app which summarises news stories from media companies, when he was just 15, and quickly attracted more than £1m of investment.

Now 17, Mr D’Aloisio has been offered a job at Yahoo, which will use the app’s features in mobile products.

Speaking to the London Evening Standard, he said: “I like shoes, I will buy a new pair of Nike trainers and I’ll probably get a new computer, but at the moment I just want to save and bank it.

“I don’t have many living expenses.”

Earlier today he posted a message on the website expressing his excitement at the partnership.

“Yahoo! has an inspirational goal to make people’s daily routines entertaining and meaningful, and mobile will be a central part of that vision. For us, it’s the perfect fit,” he said.

He also added his gratitude to those who helped the app receive Apple’s Best Apps of 2012 award.

“Without you all, this never would have been possible. I’d also like to thank my family, friends and school for supporting me.”

Yahoo’s senior vice president of mobile, Adam Cahan, said the company was excited to begin working with Mr D’Aloisio.

“For publishers, the Summly technology provides a new approach to drive interest in stories and reach a generation of mobile users that want information on the go,” he wrote.
