Plans are already underway to hold another food festival in Wimbledon’s piazza this summer after last week’s strong turnout at Food Fest ‘10.

Food Fest, running for the first time, began last Monday and finished on Thursday while the Mamma Mia Italian Market ended on Sunday.

The culinary events are organised by Wimbledon Town Centre under the Going For Gold Scheme, which aims to raise the town’s awareness in the run-up to the 2012 Olympics.

Wimbledon Town Centre manager Tracy Francis said: “Despite some bad weather, it’s been a lovely event with traders trying each other’s food, the public having a good time and even some emotional hugs and kisses at the end!”

Food Fest’s multi-cuisine event included Caribbean, Moroccan and Indian food plus sweets such as chocolates and cupcakes.

Local resident Peter Young said: “I was a bit hesitant to be honest, but it gave me a chance to try food that normally I wouldn’t go anywhere near.”

The Italian Market included authentic food such as cheeses, hams and olive oils from the Italian southern regions.

Wimbledon Town Centre is run by the Merton Chamber of Commerce, with the main goal of raising the profile of Wimbledon and its businesses.
