More than 20 firefighters in effort to battle blaze at Wimbledon tennis courts

A fire has outside Wimbledon’s famous tennis courts in London.

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters and officers were called after shrubbery caught fire in the practice court area of the All England Tennis and Croquet Club on Church Road.

London Fire Brigade was called at just after 12.30pm, with the fire under control at 1.32pm.

 

Crews from Tooting, Wandsworth, Fulham and New Malden fire stations remain at the scene.

The fire damaged around one tonne of mixed building materials, around 20 metres of hedgerow and a small section of a temporary marquee.

It comes weeks before the annual Grand Slam tennis tournament kicks off.

The cause of the fire, which was close to Gate 1, is currently being investigated.
