Wimbledon Disarmament Coalition to join Jeremy Corbyn at Stop Trident march in Westminster

Members of the Wimbledon Disarmament Coalition will join the protest against Britain’s nuclear weapons system at a Trident march in Westminster tomorrow.

The rally is expected to attract around 50,000 protestors including Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and British actress Vanessa Redgrave.

The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) protest starts at midday on Saturday 27 at Marble Arch, campaigners will then march towards Trafalgar Square where the rally will continue for the afternoon.

Joanna Bazley, 60, secretary of the Wimbledon Disarmament Coalition, said: “I am not prepared to have a so called defense system which relies on threatening to kill ten million people in one stroke.”

The protest aims to attract support for the CND’s movement to disarm Britain’s nuclear weapons, ahead of plans for their renewal costing £100billion of public funds.

Protestors argue that the consequences of deploying nuclear weapons are so great that Britain will never initiate an attack, rendering Trident a useless and expensive means for obtaining political influence.

Speaking about previous objections to Trident, Mrs Bazley said: “The politicians did not listen, they liked their great big weapon, they liked their status symbol.”

The cause is being supported by 27 organisations including Green peace, Med Act, The Green Party and The People’s Assembly.

The Wimbledon resident continued: “Once you step back and realise that nuclear weapons are not keeping you safe and it’s the existence of nuclear weapons in the world that is putting the whole world in danger that the whole thing falls to bits.”
