Wallington man convicted of raping 70-year-old victim in ‘horrific ordeal’ in her own home

A man who raped, attacked and robbed a woman in her 70s, pleaded guilty to five offences including rape and sexual assault when he appeared in Croydon Crown Court last week.

Jason Batchelor, 46, unemployed, of Maldon Road, Wallington, submitted his victim to a harrowing ordeal when he trespassed onto her property gaining access through her back garden.

It was just before eight o’clock on the morning of May 11 when he was confronted by the victim who had indicated to him to leave the property when she saw him through a window.

Batchelor refused to move as, from her front door, the woman asked Batchelor what he wanted.

He reacted by jamming the door with his foot preventing her from closing it and forcing his way inside.

He then subjected the 70-year-old to a viscous ordeal, punching and bruising her extensively, raping her and then callously helping himself to the pensioner’s cash.

Working with specialist detectives from the Met’s Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command she was able to provide a description of her attacker including the tattoos on his neck and chest.

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Inspector Keith Ward, said: “This was a horrific ordeal for this elderly lady and her courage and bravery throughout this investigation has been humbling.”

Witnesses, DNA and forensic investigations were able to match Batchelor to the attack and he was arrested at his home address on May 14.

Batchelor was alleged to have said when detectives arrived: “”I’m sorry I never done anything like this before, I swear to God I’ve messed up, I’m sorry.”

Batchelor was convicted of rape, attempted rape, sexual assault, actual bodily harm and trespass with intent to commit a sexual offence.

He will be sentenced at Croydon Crown Court on 19 August.
