Walking in a Wimbledon wonderland! Thousands descend on town centre for Christmas fair

Thousands of people descended on Wimbledon Town Centre on Sunday to see the Broadway transformed into a snow-swept Winter Wonderland.

The Broadway was closed off for the one-day event, with the usual stream of cars and buses replaced by market stalls and Christmas-themed entertainment.

Circus performers dressed as giant snowmen, dancing penguins and fire-eating elves all helped people get in the festive spirit.

This is the second year in a row that Love Wimbledon have organised the free event, which raises money for the Polka Theatre and draws in hundreds of families from across the capital.

“It just keeps getting better and better. I’m looking forward to next year’s already – even though this one’s not over yet!” said Mayor of Merton Cllr Agatha Akyigyina, who officially opened the Wonderland.

Characters from Frozen took to one of the two stages to perform songs from the hit film, whilst a scattering of artificial snow blew through the street.

There were carousels, a snowboard simulator and a rodeo reindeer for the kids, whilst the adults were kept busy with traditional market stalls that sold home-ware, jewellery and stocking fillers.

Street food from around the world was on offer, with vendors serving up treats from Mexico, India and Japan.

The event finished off with a fireworks display at 5.30pm.

The Christmas Market will be open every weekend up until Christmas from 11am – 7pm on Saturdays and 11am- 6pm on Sundays.
