Urination and defecation crackdown: Hammersmith and Fulham considers issuing fines

Anyone caught spending a penny in Shepherds Bush’s public spaces could splash out more than they bargained for with authorities considering introducing on-the-spot fines.

Hammersmith and Fulham council are asking residents for their opinion on whether new police powers to charge anyone caught urinating or defecating in public £100 should be approved.

Despite the fact that Shepherds Bush Green has two public toilets there were 42 calls to police about going to the toilet in Shepherds Bush Green public spaces between July and December last year.

Hammersmith and Fulham council’s cabinet member for environment, transport and residents’ services, Cllr Wesley Harcourt said: “People using public spaces as toilets is completely unacceptable and has been a problem in this ward for some time.

“This new power would allow officers to enforce this effectively, for the benefit of the community, but we’d love to hear whether residents feel it is the right thing to do.”

Enforcement would be the responsibility of police officers, designated council officers, neighbourhood wardens and park police.

The consultation period will end on March 20 and if approved will come into effect from April 1.

To respond residents should call 0208 753 4275 or email [email protected]
