The pair were apparently trying to hoist the sofa from the ground into the house with ropes.

The ropes can still be seen hanging from the balcony at the scene.

Battersea dog walker Mary Whammond, 58, said: “This is really sad.

“I’ve never seen anything like this in the five years I’ve been walking dogs here.

“This is a quiet area.”

Chelsea & Fulham MP Greg Hands said he believed the pair who died were removal men who were attempting to manoeuvre a sofa out of the exclusive London address.

He tweeted:

“Just spoke with Cadogan Ests [sic], not their property, but believe balcony broke when the removal men were moving a sofa out and the combined weight might have broken it.

“Casualties were removal staff. My thoughts are with their families.

London Fire Brigade, Metropolitan Police along with ambulance crews attended the scene.
