Tommy Williams shrugs off transfer talk as Kingstonian focus on promotion

Tommy Williams has poured cold water on a Kingstonian spending spree before the end of the season, despite the successful signing of striker Andre McCollin.

McCollin scored in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Grays Athletic, in a result which moved them up to seventh in the Ryman Premier Division, just two places outside the playoffs.

However, manager Williams insists they won’t be able to match the financial muscle of league leaders Hampton & Richmond Borough and second-placed Dulwich Hamlet.

“We have had to cut our cloth accordingly this year,” he said.

“Dulwich and Hampton have paid transfer fees for players but we aren’t in the position to do that.

“I would like to strengthen but we are not in the position right now. We have to get players out to bring players in.”

If McCollin is a rare signing then it has paid off so far, with the former Cray Wanderers striker netting five goals in four games since his January move.

Kingstonian now travel to fellow promotion contenders Billericay Town, and Williams believes his side can take anyone after their fifth win in a row.

“We have been going well,” he said.

“We had a good win on Saturday and we certainly feel it is the business end of the season, so we need to make sure we keep picking up points.

“It is very tight at the top so we need to stay there and keep up with the pack and the only way we will do that is by winning games.”

Kingstonian will play more than most between now and the end of the campaign, as they have three games in hand on some teams above them.

Williams doesn’t think it is an advantage as he tries to plot their way into the playoffs, which are currently just one point away.

“You would rather have the points on the board for sure,” he said.

“Having these games means it is in our hands though, but the Ryman Premier is a tough league, there are no easy games in it.”
