Sun seekers are out in full force today enjoying this week’s surprise Indian summer at some of South West London’s hotspots.

The UK’s largest outdoor pool, Tooting Bec Lido, is celebrating the warm weather by staying open to members of the public for an extra weekend.

The pool was due to close to the public today but site managers DC Leisure decided it is in the public’s interest to be able to enjoy the glorious weather in the Lido’s serene surroundings.

DC Leisure employee Charlotte Barnes said: “We’re really busy today.”

The Lido will be one of the best opportunities for Londoners to cool off in the heat this weekend.

Normally it would only be members of annual-fee paying South London Swimming Club (SLSC) who have access to the Lido and its facilities from 1st October.

“I love it here. You wouldn’t know we were in London. You can’t see any buildings, just trees. In winter it’s like a playground for adults doing pilates and exercises before jumping in the pool,” an SLSC member said.

“It’s great that families can enjoy themselves this weekend in London instead of travelling to Brighton or the beach.”

Other sun worshipers have escaped to the parks for their share of sunshine action.

Charlie Murray, 17, and her college friends were enjoying lounging on Clapham Common this morning. They said they were making the most of the sun before going to college this afternoon.

Miss Murray said: “I’ve got my shorts on. Everyone gets their shorts on when the sun comes out. I’ll be out this weekend topping up my tan.”

The UK has seen unusually high temperatures and unbroken sunshine this week.

Yesterday saw temperatures peak at 28.8C in Kew Gardens making it the hottest 29th September on record; a record held since 1895.
