Richmond Park MP Zac Goldsmith declares intention to stand as Conservative mayoral candidate

Zac Goldsmith has thrown his hat into the ring to stand for nomination and become the Conservative candidate for London mayor.

The Richmond Park MP revealed his intention to the Evening Standard saying that he was encouraged to do so by those ‘from across the political spectrum’.

The environmentalist, who put his opposition to Heathrow expansion at the heart of his general election campaign, also announced that he will ballot his constituents to seek their approval.

This comes just 24 hours after ex-England footballer Sol Campbell declared his intention to stand for nomination on a Tory ticket in a bid to replace Boris Johnson.

The pair will join other Conservative candidates for the position at a hustings on July 4.
