Putney Labour candidate pays tribute to ‘amazing’ team and voters who supported party ‘in hope and love’

Labour candidate Sheila Boswell took a number of positives out of her election campaign in Putney despite finishing second to Justine Greening today.

The Labour candidate earned 12,838 votes trailing behind the Conservative candidate who won 23,018 votes.

The result in Putney was an improvement on the last general election and Ms Boswell looked back on her election campaign with fondness.

She said: “The highlight of the whole campaign was the hustings – I really enjoyed them.

“I thought that the hustings run by the Putney society, Roehampton University and others were absolutely fabulous because the public have come and put all of us candidates through our paces on such a range of issues.

“People wanted to talk about international issues and they wanted to talk about the bus station on Chelverton Road as well so it made it really interesting for all of us.”

Putney is as a very strong Tory seat and to have improved by more than one thousand votes from 2010 is viewed as a huge bonus for Labour.

This is a hat-trick for Ms Greening who has won in Putney highlighting the dominance her party have in the constituency.

However Ms Boswell was not deterred and was quick to offer her thanks to the support network around her during the campaign.

She said: “Most of all I would like to thank my amazing team in Putney, you’ve been absolutely fantastic and you’ve worked your socks off for every Labour vote so thank you.

“Remember that thousands of people in Putney did vote Labour today and they voted not in fear and hate, they voted in hope and love.”

Similarly Green candidate Chris Poole enjoyed the night and was happy with the campaign.

He said: “It’s been a fantastic experience, I’m proud of what I’ve managed to do.

“I’ve learnt a lot which I think is one of the key things I was hoping to do for myself in doing this.

“I’ve learnt a lot – so much about campaigning – and I’ve gone it to the real details of some obscure policies of ours.

“It’s really shown me that this is what I want to do for the next 30 years of my life and I’ll try and keep getting better at each aim.”
