MERTON may once again suffer from further industrial action by workers at Royal Mail.
A poll of workers opened on September 17 about the possibility of a nationwide walkout following recent localised strikes.
The Communication Workers Union (CWU), who has its headquarters on The Broadway in Wimbledon, is the representative union for the striking postal workers.
The backlog of post has affected many in the Merton area, with the CWU claiming that over 20 million items have being delayed in the London area alone.
Further claims assert some items are taking over a week to deliver, which Royal Mail denies.
Sian Jones, Press Officer for the CWU, said the backlog caused by the strikes can be seen in the area, with photographs being published in a national newspaper of mail being sorted in the streets of Wimbledon.
Local businesses acting as agents for other shipping firms such as DHL are seeing some increase in business.
One DHL agent in Merton said: “Businesses are already moving away from Royal Mail and Parcelforce to DHL because they are concerned about reliability.
“Due to the cost, we are not seeing a dramatic increase in domestic delivery; however that may change if there are more strikes.”
The results of the poll will be known in early October.
