Pop Brixton launches Christmas market

Pop Brixton, a community-focused independent business space, launched its Christmas market on November 26.

This is the second such market to be held since Pop Brixton opened in May 2015.

While many traders are locals, either living in or having connections to Lambeth, others have come from across London.

One trader said: “Many of the markets are are very touristy now, so hopefully this market will help all the people here.”

“It’s about meeting local customers, shopping local and encouraging that”, said another.

Pop Brixton was born when Lambeth Council sought ideas for how a piece of disused land could best be used.

Architect Carl Turner came up with the idea to transform the space into a hub for local businesses, built from repurposed shipping containers, which met with approval from Lambeth Council.

The project’s website says: “We prioritise membership applications from local people, as we believe that supporting those who already live and work in the community is the best way to create a positive impact.”

Whether the market returns for a third year will depend on whether customers can be lured away from the high street and the internet.
