Great British Bake Off fans in Wimbledon raised hundreds of pounds for Macmillan today.
For the past three years New Wimbledon Theatre has been among several south west London venues holding Macmillan cancer support coffee mornings, selling cakes ranging from bread pudding to lemon drizzle.
A total of more than £138million has been raised through the annual fundraiser since the first event in 1990.
Front of house supervisor Charlie Walker, 22, of Cheam, said: “We have hosted the coffee morning here for the last three years.
“The theatre likes to help the Macmillan cancer support and we are also involved with Cure Leukaemia.”
Susan, a founding member of Friends of New Wimbledon Theatre, was selling cakes and coffees for the third year running.
“Two years ago we raised more than £700,” she said. “This year we’ve raised £300 so far and we’re hoping for more sales at Dirty Dancing tonight.”
Last year alone saw more than £25million raised from this annual fundraiser, which since 2010 has been partnered with M&S.
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: “I’m delighted to join Londoners across the capital to support the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning – sharing a slice of cake and a cup of coffee with my team at City Hall.
“The vital services that Macmillan Cancer Support provide to thousands of people with cancer in London and the UK are only possible due to the generosity of volunteers and fundraisers, so please show your support and give whatever you can.”
Everyone hosting a coffee morning receives a certificate and the money donated can be paid in online, over the phone direct to the charity or through a paying in slip at NatWest.
