Match Report: Scunthorpe 1 AFC Wimbledon 1

AFC Wimbledon opened their League One season with a draw against Scunthorpe thanks to debutant Nadjim Abdou’s second-half strike.

The hosts led after just six minutes thanks to left-back Conor Townsend, but couldn’t maintain their lead under heavy second half pressure.

Yet the Dons fought their way back to end the day as one of four teams in League One to open their season with a draw.

Scunthorpe’s bright start was rewarded when Josh Morris’ pass picked out the marauding Henderson, who fired in an accurate finish.

AFC Wimbledon slowly came to life as first Andy Barcham and then Cody McDonald saw efforts sail wide when they arguably should have done better.

Abdou gave a sign of what was to come when he sent an effort over the bar from outsude the area.

Just after the hour mark he was to make no mistake, volleying home from the edge of the box as the Dons’ pressure paid off handsomely.

Scunthorpe struggled for any momentum in the second half, and its Wimbledon who oculd have pulled further head.

Lyle Taylor should have done better with an attempt inside the box, and Matt Gilks rescued a point by tipping Paul Robinson’s header away.
