Kingston University alumnus becomes bestselling author in Singapore with ‘Average Joe’s Guide to Investing’

A Kingston University alumnus has become a bestselling author in his native Singapore at just 26.

Sudhan Purushothuman is the co-author of Invest Lah! The Average Joe’s Guide to Investing, a book about personal finance and the stock market.

The 26-year-old studied aircraft engineering at Kingston until September when one of his co-authors found their book on the bestsellers’ section at a bookstore in Singapore.

“We felt elated that our hard work had paid off and at the same time, we felt encouraged,” Sudhan said.

He started writing the book at the end of 2012 along with Chong Ser Jing and Ting Wei Lin and managed to make a surprisingly quick finish by March 2013.

The KU alumnus has always been equally passionate about aerospace and investing, which he has been doing since the age of 21, and his book offers useful tips to invest wisely.

“Putting money in the bank will get us nowhere as the returns are paltry, especially in Singapore,” he said.

“By just socking money in the bank, we are actually losing money after accounting for inflation.”

The authors’ biggest difficulty was explaining the content in a way that everyone would understand.

Sudhan followed Einstein’s advice, ‘make things as simple as possible, but not simpler’.

Sudhan has received many positive reviews as the first print is sold out and a second reprint will soon be out in Singapore, where he lives at the moment.

The book is written in English and the Singaporean word ‘Lah’ has no definitive meaning but spices up a sentence – in the title’s case it means ‘come on, just invest!’

The former student said he loved Kingston University as he made friends from around the world, worked in amazing facilities and received quality education from experienced lecturers.

Following this success, Sudhan is looking for new ways to spread the word of the book and educate more people about the ‘wonderful world of investing’.
