Jose Mourinho praises Chelsea fans as his side secure Capital One Cup final with victory over Liverpool

CHELSEA (2) 1- 0 (1) LIVERPOOL

Jose Mourinho feels Chelsea’s supporters buoyed their side to victory over Liverpool last night to secure their place in the Capital One Cup final.

Branislav Ivanovic’s extra-time header was the difference on the night and on aggregate as Chelsea earned a meeting against either Tottenham or Sheffield United at Wembley.

Mourinho believes the raucous Stamford Bridge crowd answered questions over poor atmosphere at the ground and can help their side to trophies this season.

“The supporters were absolutely fantastic and that is what we need,” he said.

“Hopefully the fans can do it for us in the Premier League and Champions League because we will need them.”

He is also aware of the excitement the fans will feel about watching their team play for a trophy at the national stadium.

He said: “I know that the final at Wembley always means a lot, doesn’t matter what the competition is, FA Cup, League Cup, Wembley is Wembley.”

Mourinho, who has lead Chelsea to two League Cup trophies in the past, feels last night’s victory was made all the more sweeter by Liverpool’s recent run of good form.

“They are a very difficult opponent, and I am even happier as we beat a very good team over two legs,” he said.

“They were there, a very good team. Great work by Brendan [Rodgers], changing the shape and mode of play because the way they started the season was not going the right way.”

Liverpool manager Rodgers feels his side were the better of the two and that Chelsea’s victory should be credited to only one of their players.

He said: “We’re very proud of the team, I think over the two legs we were the better side.

“Their keeper has got them into the final, his saves won them the game.”
