Gun amnesty at Ham shooting club as public invited to help improve conditions

Summary:

The private shooting club was founded in 1903.

Celebrating over a century of shooting expertise in South West London, Ham and Petersham Rifle and Pistol Club are this weekend asking members to hand in their weapons.

Club directors, Bruce Whibley and Ivor Lawrence are inviting members and community visitors to put down their guns and get their hands dirty to fix up the club after 110 years in business.

A spokesman for the club said: “There will be no shooting as we are holding a work party weekend to improve our facilities. All would be welcome to help keep the club in good condition.”

The private shooting club was founded in 1903 and now runs a large number of competitions in a range of shooting disciplines throughout the year.

The office and bar are manned by members of the Committee who volunteer their free time and work unpaid.

The members rave about the facilities on offer, with one member “Packrat” taking to social media to endorse the staff: “They are a friendly bunch and it’s a really fun club. It’s a lot more active than some I checked out when I was looking to join one.”

The club is host to six outdoor ranges from 25 yards to 100 yards in length and these are used for archery, air guns, rifles and Black Powder pistols.

Visitors to the club are catered for on “Guest Day” which is the first Sunday of each month.

Club directors say they are a great opportunity to show prospective guests around, tell them about the club and introduce them to areas of specific interest on a one to one basis with experienced members.
