A 43-year-old man has been sentenced to three months in prison after being found guilty of malicious communications offences related to the Grenfell Tower fire.
Omega Mwaikambo, 43, of Testerton Walk, W11 opened a body bag to take a photo and video, which he shared on his Facebook page.
He pleaded guilty at Westminster Magistrates’ Court today, to two counts under Section 127 of the Communications Act.
He received six weeks in prison for each count, to run consecutively, making a total of twelve weeks in prison.
Mwaikambo was originally arrested near to Latimer Road tube station at around 6pm on June 14 after he posted images relating to the fire at Grenfell Tower on social media.
Prosecutor Tom Little said: “He uploaded photographs and video of the deceased inside the body bag and then five photographs of the upper body and the face and the blood that had drained from the body.
“It appears as if that individual might have been someone that jumped from the tower and had not survived and was waiting to be moved to the coroner’s mortuary.”
He was taken to a west London police station and subsequently charged.
30 people are confirmed to have died in the Grenfell Tower fire so far, with the number expected to rise.
