General Election 2015: Labour’s Will Martindale ‘humbled’ by Battersea supporters’ campaign help

Battersea saw Labour newcomer Will Martindale place second despite an increased share of the votes by 1.7%.

Mr Martindale had hoped to overturn the Conservative hold in a constituency that was on the bottom of Ed Miliband’s target list.

He said: “I would like to start by congratulating Jane Ellison and I wish her absolutely every success in the new parliament.

“I would like to thank each and every person that voted Labour and my amazing team, in particular Sean Lawless, my organiser, and my wife Shalu.

“I am truly humbled by all your passion and all your commitment and our friendships will endure

However when asked for a further comment Mr Martindale told the South West Londoner “Sorry, no way.”

Coming third was the Liberal Democrats whose parliamentary candidate in Battersea, Luke Taylor, had originally batted away the exit polls.

Following on from Mr Martindale, he said: “I would like to congratulate Jane on her re-election as well as everyone who is involved in the efforts here at Wandsworth Town Hall.

“There are a number of Liberal Democrat lights that would have bleeped out tonight across the country – incredibly hard-working MPs who have achieved much over the last 5, 10 or however many years.

“I think that come the coalition or the minority government that forms after the election – the value of Liberal Democrats standing by the side of the Conservatives will be lost and it will be noted that it has been lost.”

The Lib Dem candidate wasn’t happy with the newly re-elected Battersea MP after she forgot to mention Liberal Democrat MP, Lynne Featherstone in her speech.

He said: “I noted that Jane Ellison neglected to mention the efforts of Lynn Featherstone in the FGM campaign.

Mr Taylor was confident about his party’s future though, he added: “The Liberal Democrats, whatever the end of the polls tonight, will go strength to strength so thank you to everyone who has voted for us.”
