Fulham turned pink to raise awareness for breast cancer today.

The Haven, a national breast cancer charity who provide free treatment, are trying to raise £2000 to help people in need of physical or emotional support.

To raise awareness, Fulham Broadway has been decorated with over 1000 pink balloons.

People can text to donate £5 to The Haven by texting FITP12 £5 to 70070.

Hammersmith and Fulham Mayor Belinda Donovan said: “We hope this pink event will not only help The Haven but will put a spotlight on Fulham and the amazing community spirit.”

She added: “I am especially happy to support this event today as my 82-year-old mother had breast cancer four years ago and is luckily still with us.”

Over 100 volunteers helped with the decorations for the day with Wetherspoons providing free coffee for all involved as a show of their support.

Lois Page, responsible for organising the event, said: “We want as people as possible to know that we are here.

“Something that would be dreadful would be that if someone had breast cancer in Fulham and didn’t know how to make use of the facilities that we offer.”

Local businesses are also involved in the event with Sainsbury’s holding a raffle and JOY selling special pink pads, picture frames and other merchandise.

“There is a really good vibe in the shopping centre,” said JOY Store Manager, Bridgette Vo.

“This is my first year involved in the campaign and I think it is great!”

Sharda Mainali, who runs the Sia Beauty stall in the Fulham Broadway Shopping Centre, said that what the charity was doing was great for those who have suffered or know someone who has suffered with breast cancer.

Throughout the month the #pinkfulham is being used on Twitter to raise awareness of the campaign.

The Haven has specialist nurses and experts in nutrition, exercise and emotional support to provide tailor-made programmes for each visitor.

They have three centres in the UK, in Fulham, Leeds and in Hereford.

The government do not fund their work so they rely on charitable donations and fundraising events to continue helping breast cancer sufferers.

They suggest a number of unique ways to get involved in fundraising throughout October.

These include having an open mic night, a quiz, dying your hair pink, or having a pink window display in your shop or business.
