EXCLUSIVE: Tessa Jowell backs Tooting’s Sadiq Khan after losing London mayoral nomination contest

Tessa Jowell MP has congratulated Sadiq Khan MP for winning the election to stand as the Labour candidate for London Mayor in 2016.

Mr Khan, the former shadow justice secretary, won the election with a final round vote share of 58.9%, beating favourite Dame Jowell’s 41.1%.

The current MP for Tooting has said that he will step down as a Member of Parliament if he becomes Mayor next year, which will trigger a by-election.

Dame Jowell told South West Londoner: “Congratulations to Sadiq for a fair and decent contest.

“Our overriding priority now is to make him Mayor of London.”

Fellow candidate Christian Wolmar praised the work Mr Khan put into his campaign, but hoped he could still serve his constituents.

He said: “I was convinced Sadiq would win.

“He has a broad support range in the party and he’s been working very hard for a long time.

“He must convince us that he can still be MP for Tooting whilst campaigning for Mayor next year, however. It would be impressive if he does both.

“I will be totally supporting him and will look forward to working with him.”
