Brave postwoman rescues man from 17th floor Battersea flat fire

A brave postwoman rescued a man from his burning kitchen on the 17th floor of a Battersea tower block on Saturday morning.

The unidentified woman led the man to safety after hearing the smoke alarm go off in his Parkham Street home – she then called the fire brigade.

The man was found on a chair in the lift lobby away from the smoke fumes when the emergency services arrived.

Three fire engines and around 14 firefighters and officers from Battersea, Fulham and Clapham fire stations attended the incident.

Fire crews wearing breathing apparatus contained the fire in the kitchen of the flat, which was slightly damaged.

The man was taken to hospital by the London Ambulance Service suffering from smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
