Bliss for Balham book-lovers: H is for Hawk author joins China Miéville for inaugural literary festival

Book-loving Balhamites have reason to celebrate as the borough will hold its first literary festival, with celebrated authors Helen Macdonald, Robert Macfarlane and China Miéville in attendance this month.

The three-day festival ‘A Way of Being in the World’ looks at people’s connections to the landscapes they inhabit this June 10-12.

The event is run in conjunction with Dulwich Books of West Dulwich, which was named Best London Bookshop 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Dulwich Books’ Susie Nicklin says: “We are all connected to our landscapes, whether urban, rural or those inside our heads, but how do we bring them to life?

“There are people – writers, photographers, musicians, artists across all genres – who describe and animate our surroundings with insight and verve, and we are delighted to welcome some of the greatest of these to our festival in June 2016.”

The event kicked off last week with a bee count at Tooting Bec Common to highlight the declining bee population and the impact that this is having on our environment, and a midnight run.

This weekend celebrated authors will discuss a plethora of topics with a non-euphemistic discussion of the birds and the bees to experiences of Paris and London, with live music taking place on the Friday.

Author of the costa-winning H is for Hawk Heather Macdonald will evaluate the resurgence of British nature writing, and best-selling writer Robert Macfarlane will debate the Myth of the Green Man with China Miéville and Nina Lyon.

The event is sure to make book-worms wrench themselves away from their reads, if only for the weekend.
