Armed Forces Day annual fete at Surbiton’s Royal Star & Garter Homes raises £2,000

Surbiton’s Royal Star & Garter Homes raised £2,000 for ex-servicemen and women who suffer from disabilities and dementia at its annual fete on Armed Forces Day.

Throughout the day there were a number of live performances to keep the hundreds who attended entertained, including a performance from The Star & Garter choir which is made up of residents, relatives, staff and volunteers.

Among those who attended the fete on Saturday were Kingston Mayor Councillor Margaret Thompson, the home’s residents and their relatives and the Kingston Sea Cadets.

Kingston’s Mayor Margaret Thompson said: “The home is wonderful and the fete looks lovely with lots of items made by the residents, I am very proud to see our community here supporting our veterans on Armed Forces Day, as they support us.”

The fete which was part of the community’s week-long acknowledgment of the Armed Forces was the final event of a week which saw activities held at the charity’s homes in Surbiton, Solihull and High Wycombe.

Andy Cole, chief executive at The Royal Star & Garter Homes, said: “It was great to open our doors to the Surbiton community and we had a fabulous day with out neighbours and friends, we were delighted to receive such warm feedback from both visitors and our residents and we are so grateful for their support.

“The money raised will make a real difference to the award-winning care we provide.”

The fete included World War II memorabilia, whilst a tombola and raffle took place alongside a stream of family orientated games like hook-a-duck and skittles.

A chocolate fountain put in place seemed popular with everyone and the availability of Pimms proved to be the perfect tonic for the adults on the hottest day of the year.

Surbiton resident Jo said: “It is a great fete, there’s lots of different things here. We’ll be back again next year.”
